Daniela Cohen – My Story
I am passionate about facilitating meaningful connections amongst diverse individuals. My passion stems from the experience of growing up in apartheid South Africa. Even though I was privileged as a white person in this system of institutionalized racism, witnessing this injustice around me at a young age as well as experiencing barriers to connecting with peers of different races left a lasting impact.
Fourteen years after emigrating to Canada, I returned to South Africa to volunteer with Amazwi, a non-profit organization empowering rural African women to share their experiences. I have since worked for over ten years supporting refugees and immigrants in adapting to their new home in both South Africa and Canada.
It is only in the last few years that I have learned about the history of oppression against the Indigenous peoples that Canada shares with South Africa. As a settler on this land, I am committed to ongoing learning around these issues, and doing my part in working towards reconciliation with and justice for Indigenous peoples.
Why Work With Me?
In addition to my lived experiences, I have a background in education, an MA in Conflict Analysis and Management, and extensive experience designing and implementing initiatives to foster intercultural understanding.
I have designed and facilitated experiential, interactive workshops to engage adults and youth in various communities in conversations to foster understanding of diversity, equity, power, privilege and inclusion. I have also trained youth and school staff in conflict resolution skills, as well as facilitated various restorative conflict resolution processes, including mediation. I am also a writer, creating work that highlights underrepresented perspectives to be able to create greater empathy and understanding around critical social issues.
I am interested in assisting individuals and organizations to enhance equity and inclusion while creatively engaging with conflict in a systemic and sustainable way to create environments where everyone can thrive. I offer a range of consultancy services to assist individuals and organizations to design and implement initiatives that best suit their needs.
